Artist residency in Bolu, TURKEY

Bolu artist-in-residence program is a two week residency organized by AmongOtherThings.

We brought together emerging artists from various cultures and provided a working and living environment which allowed artists to interact with each other and with the members of AmongOtherThings.

168 artist from over 30 countries submitted portfolio for the program.

Caroline de Bruijn, Sibel Horada, Mathieu Latulippe, Katherine Pickering, Sumer Sayin, and Stephanie Spindler joined AOT team, Esra Oskay, Tan Mavitan, Ulgen Semerci, and Burcu Yagcioglu for the program.

It took place between 4th and 18th of October 2010. The residency program was followed by Gittikçe exhibition in Simotas Building in Istanbul, which was consisted of the works produced during this two week time.

We believe that the space which the residency took place is an important aspect of this program. The city of Bolu is two hour car ride from Istanbul. Although it is not far from a metropolis with a population of 14 million, Bolu is known with its impressive nature and wild forests. The residency took place in a 31 acre ranch area beside the forests of West Black Sea region, which allowed the residency artists to interact with the unique environment in the process of producing their works.

What was provided to the residency artists;

- Transportation of the artists and the works from Istanbul to Bolu and vice versa
- Accommodation in Bolu during the residency
- Wood workshop
- Studio space
- 100TL material budget
- Tutorials and workshops with Erdag Aksel, Mehmet Ulusel, Joey Holder and Ceren Semerci
- Exhibition in Kuzguncuk, Istanbul
- Accommodation in Istanbul during the exhibition
- All meals throughout the residency

Site of Flesh and Stone
Feb. 10th – March 3rd

What kind of relation exists between bodies and cities? Are the cities only reflections or products of the bodies and human endeavour, or is this relation a more complex and mutual one? What can be the alternative approaches to this relation?

City is a vast scale construction in space, which can be perceived only in the course of long time spans. Bodies, as one of the moving elements of the city, are as effective as the stationary physical parts of it.

The city in its particular geographical and architectural arrangements is an ingredient in the social constitution of the body. The city is also the site for the body’s cultural saturation and transformation by representational systems, the mass media, and the arts. It is the place where the body is representationally reexplored, transformed, and reinscribed. In turn, the body as a cultural product of the city transforms and reinscribes the urban landscape according to its changing demographic needs.

The artists in the show, all coming from different cities and all having different bodily experience of cities are raising questions about the possible alternatives to the relationship between bodies and cities.
